Participation in the National Lakes AssessmentGuest speaker, Professor Charles Pederson from Eastern Illinois University will be speaking to the home owners of Loon Lakes Management Association and the members of the Northern Illinois Conservation Club on Thursday, August 21 at 7:30 pm at the Antioch Township Office located on Deep Lake Road. The USEPA initiated the National Lakes Assessment project to conduct a survey of the nation’s lakes. An underlying goal of the NLA is evaluation of the ecological condition of lakes and the extent that lake resources support human activities. All of the 910 lakes included in the survey were selected at random in effort to generate statistically valid estimates of the condition of all lakes, both regionally and nationally, with known confidence. Of the 910 NLA lakes, 17 are located in Illinois. An additional 33 lakes in Illinois were selected for sampling, to enhance spatial coverage within the state and in effort to identify bodies of water that might be suited for defining reference conditions. These lakes were visited from June 1 through September 1, 2007 and 2008. Loon Lake has been chosen as part of this study and based on the 2007 samplings has been rated the best for water quality based on secci disc readings. Professor Pederson will provide an update on the National Lakes Assessment as well as discuss topics such as the biological make up of a lake and Loon Lake's participation in the study.
